The project “Learning, Identity and the Digital” arises from the need to explore the role ICT technologies can have as key enablers of quality of life among social groups who have fewer opportunities to benefit from digital resources.
In an ubiquitous world, inequalities regarding access, use of, and knowledge of ICT technologies can compromise community participation and wellbeing of social vulnerable groups. Despite European Union best efforts to promote digital literacy measures (e.g. i2010) asymmetries continue to be found among these groups.
This postdoctoral research project focus on intervention strategies addressing digital inclusion and social participation, and it also highlights the importance of intergenerational knowledge transfer and active citizenship.
The digital inclusion interventions to be designed will be based on action research and service learning principles and explore photography and/ or digital storytelling to debate concepts such as learning, identity and participation.
First Research Triennium (February 2012 - January 2015)
Goals: evaluate digital inclusion and explore innovative and dynamic educational strategies to promote digital literacy and social participation;
Results: digital literacy should not be perceived in a traditionalist way, but as a result of social and cognitive skills as well as personal experiences;
Implications: future digital literacy interventions should take into account the uses and needs of each social group because their specificities differ from the uses and needs of the so called digital native population.
Second Research Triennium (February 2015 - January 2018)
Goals
1. Expand the knowledge in the field of digital literacy by focusing on digital health literacy;
2. Analyse the impact of health digital literacy on personal lifestyles, particularly those from social vulnerable groups;
3. Develop participatory intervention strategies designed to enhance digital health literacy by articulating intergenerational cooperation in public spaces (e.g. libraries);
